The Giants signed veteran corner David Long Jr. on Wednesday to add more competition to their incomplete secondary.

Long, 26, played 14 games on three different teams last season: the Las Vegas Raiders (eight), Carolina Panthers (three) and Green Bay Packers (three).

The former L.A. Rams 2019 third-round pick has played both outside corner and the slot in his career, including a start in the slot for the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Feb. 2022. He also has experience on special teams, though most of it came in 2019 and 2020.

Last season, Long made his two starts on the outside: one for the Raiders and one for Carolina. And was on a new team within two weeks of both starts, claimed off waivers by Carolina and Green Bay, respectively.

He did not play in either of the Packers’ playoff games.

Long joins a Giants secondary that features 2023 first-round pick Deonte Banks on one side and some uncertainty on the other, where veteran Nick McCloud, third-year corner Cor’Dale Flott and third-round rookie Andru Phillips are among the Giants’ top internal options.

McCloud is the only corner who profiles as a clear outside, though. The rest of the Giants’ corners, Long included, are slot guys with outside ability who need to prove their worth consistently on the boundary.

MINICAMP

The Giants will hold their rookie minicamp May 9-11. The first of their 10 OTA workouts is scheduled for May 20. Then the first practice open to the media will be OTA No. 3 on May 23. The club’s offseason program will conclude with a mandatory minicamp on June 11-13.
